'Centro Hípico' is the Portuguese for Riding Centre and there are several in the East Algarve and Tavira. The riding centres are happy to deal with all types of riders, from beginners to the advanced. And because of the great variation in topography in the area, you can choose to ride in open countryside, dedicated trails or along the shores of East Agrave.

Most places have English-speaking instructors, but it's always worth checking first. The available options should suit just about anybody. Beginners can book an hour's ride, and more seasoned riders can enjoy a half- or full-day hack.

Many centres are inland from the coast, but because they're keen to appeal to holidaymakers, the majority offer transportation there and back. And for longer outings, some will provide packed meals and refreshments.
